Letter To College Students
Dear Future UNA Students & Parents,
It is hard to believe that we have completed another school year, and now many of our college students are home for the summer. Although this past year has been very challenging, it may have been one of the best years for our college students. The pandemic created opportunities for them that we could have never imagined. God is good!
Now that another school year has ended, it is time to start preparing for the upcoming fall semester. We are excited to welcome back our current college-aged members. But we are also looking forward to welcoming some new faces. Because of that, we would like to tell you a little about the Helton Drive congregation and talk to you about the upcoming semester.
The Helton Drive church building is located approximately 2-3 miles northeast of the University of North Alabama (UNA). Currently, we have two shepherds who oversee the flock—Mel Ambrose and Tim Holt. We believe that all of our members are precious souls who need spiritual nourishment, encouragement, and protection. Our shepherds see to it that no one falls through the cracks. Certainly, our college-aged members are no exception. We want them to be engaged and active in both our worship and our congregational work. Over the past year our college-aged men have preached, led singing, led public prayers, delivered Lord’s Supper talks and invitations, in addition to attending the weekly Bible studies for their age group. Our college-aged ladies have been diligent in their support of the worship assemblies and Bible classes. Additionally, they took part in monthly women’s Bible studies, met to send cards to members, and some have helped teach the younger children’s Bible classes. Prior to the Covid year, both our young men and young ladies assisted in our Summer Bible series. Our goal is to provide opportunities for the spiritual growth of all our young people. We encourage you to come visit and talk to our existing college-aged members to get a feel for what their experience has been at Helton Drive.
Our members are very friendly, kind, and hospitable toward everyone, but especially our college-age members. Our preacher, Wiley Deason, and his wife, Mallory, host a weekly college Bible study every Thursday evening. Over the past four years, this study has averaged 20-25 college students each week. The students who have placed membership at Helton Drive have also gotten to know many of our members beyond those of their own age. This is very important to their spiritual growth and allows the opportunity to be influenced by older and more mature Christians. At Helton Drive, you/your child will not just come to a church and “be a part of the college group”; you will be a part of the whole Helton Drive family.
The college years are important and challenging years. A good spiritual family is an absolute necessity to helping you/your child grow and develop as a follower of Jesus. Therefore, we want to invite you to come and see for yourself. You can find information about our assemblies online at www.heltondrive.org, you can find us on Facebook by looking up the Helton Drive Church of Christ page or the Helton Drive Weekly College Bible Study page, or you can call us at (256) 766-2435. If we can help you in any way, just let us know.
